Five Ways to Harness Fire Energy This Summer

daenerys-at-the-sack-of-astapor1Danaerys Targaryen is a badass, the prototypical Queen of Wands. She’s compassionate, but takes no shit. When things go pear-shaped, she immediately takes action. Her domain is her passion; she devotes everything to building and sustaining it. She is the unburnt–she is of fire and channels its energies, so its destruction cannot touch her. She is Goddess of the Sun, the perfect matron to commune with as we slip into the red-hot realm of summer. Given the recent solstice (and its corresponding full moon), hers is the perfect energy to tap into as we cycle from ripeness to harvest.

How can we make the most of our passion and creativity this summer? Here are some practical tips to kick-start your generative energies and create the life of your dreams.

Prioritize Your Passions

Life is hectic. We’re pulled in all directions and the tide of duties and responsibilities never ceases. Amidst this, it’s easy to become stuck in a cycle of sacrifice when it comes to our dreams and desires. But our passions are the very fruit of our existence–they give our lives meaning and fill us with the contagious vibration of pursuit. Carving out time to do what we love is tantamount to creating a joyful, fulfilling life for you and those around you. Trust me, the dishes can wait. Your life purpose, however, cannot.

Set aside a block of time each week (or each day, if you’re lucky) that is specifically dedicated to the creative activity of your choice. Schedule it out in a planner or on a calendar–if you write it down, you’ll be much more likely to honor it. Make sure that you gather the tools of your art or trade beforehand; nothing’s more annoying than sitting down to begin a project and realizing that you’re unprepared. Create a space that nurtures your talents: light candles, burn incense, play music that inspires you, choose furniture that’s plush or rigid depending on your wants and needs. Preparing to do work is its own ritual–it creates associations and gets you into the “let’s do this” mindset. Eliminate potential distractions: internet, phone, television, books, kids, partners, pets, etc. If needed, meditate for ten minutes to release attachments to other tasks and concerns. Begin.

Get In Touch With Your Muse

Everyone has certain inspiration triggers–stimuli that arouse the passion to do and to create. One of the biggest services you can do for yourself is to identify these triggers, record them, and reference them each time you feel yourself falling into a creative slump. When I need soulful inspiration for writing, I turn to Walt Whitman–his free-verse poetry speaks of the beauty of nature and the power of the human spirit. When I’m creating visual art, I turn to the Punch Brothers–their highly mathematical compositions and the sheer perfection with which they play music helps me focus on the task at hand. Muses manifest themselves in many forms, and they are there to inspire us. Make good use of them, and they’ll stoke the fires of creation within.

Be the Change You Want to See in the World

When we personify our values and ethics, we feel healthy, self-loving, and confident in the messages we send out into the world. If you believe in ethically sustainable eating, go to your local farmer’s market and select the produce that speaks to you. Cooking a meal will transform from a chore into a political statement, and I guarantee that you’ll derive more joy from it. That joy of creation will trickle down into other areas of life, naturally spawning production that resonates with the self and the soul.

It’s difficult to set about pursuing our dreams when our lives are a literal mess. Do some physical and emotional house cleaning–eliminate toxic friendships, cultivate your positive relationships, and de-clutter your space so your mind can roam free. Address concerns as soon as they appear so you won’t have a litany of “to-do’s” harassing you while you’re trying to channel the light of creation. What I said about the dishes still stands–if you can get into the zone while they’re chilling’ in your sink, by all means, go for it. This is all about you and your priorities, and eliminating anything that gets in their way.

Get Your Shit Together

Danaerys is on top of her shit a great deal of the time. And when she isn’t, everything goes to hell in a hand basket (Meereen, anyone?) I am no Queen of Organization–far from it, to be honest. But I do recognize the necessity of planning ahead when it comes to pursuing my passion. I also recognize the need for a little tough-love–if I’m not going to make myself do it, who will?

The best way to create space for creation is to use your time wisely. Streamline your activities so you can kill a few birds with one stone. Cook and wash the dishes simultaneously. Make lists of what you need to do before you go out so you can get it all done in one trip. Get some exercise while you’re walking the dog. Watch tarot youtube videos while you post two-card draws to twitter while you color with your kid (yes, I actually do this). Being this productive can be hectic, but it’s totally worth it–being in constant motion trains you to be energetic and efficient in all that you do, including your passion. The sense of accomplishment you’ll feel as you tick off your tasks nourishes the soul, builds self-confidence, and activates that fire energy like no other.

Speak Your Truth

The Mother of Dragons pulls no punches when it comes to saying what she means and meaning what she says. Her heart, mind, and soul are in perfect alignment, and she conveys this each time she speaks. Perhaps she isn’t the best diplomat, but damn, does she get her point across. Action immediately follows her words, so people can trust that what she says is true.

If you’re in the habit of holding your tongue in a conflict or paving over a sticky situation with cloying words, now is the perfect time to break the cycle (or “break the wheel”). Slipping into the seat of your power is all about making yourself heard and having the strength to make space for the response. If you have trouble speaking your mind, repeat this mantra “I am God/Goddess of Fire–I’m compassionate, I create worlds, I have conviction and I command respect, I give respect and I make space for others. I deserve to have space made for me, and I will not step down until my voice is heard.”

If you need a little kick in the pants when it comes to activating fire energy, I offer a Phoenix Rising Tarot Reading that’s designed to guide you into that glorious fire element and be the beacon of creation that you’ve always wanted to be.
